I'm Jocelyn Hoppa, a writer and editor with 23 years of experience in publishing for both digital and print.
In my most recent position, I was the Director of Content for Neo4j. I ran a team of six, across multiple time zones, to meet global content marketing demands. This experience was fast-paced and fast-growing, and I learned so much. Likewise, I was happy to lend a hand with amplifying storytelling on all content. Through this job, I collaborated with product, demand generation, creative, web, and social teams.
Previously, I was a Copywriter/Content Strategist at Square 2 Marketing, an inbound marketing agency. There I produced various types of content for clients. Our content creation is mixed with an online, inbound marketing effort to draw people to our client’s businesses through multiple digital platforms. In-house, we were constantly studying the metrics of how these tactics performed. We also test and track every new feature and platform that crops up on social media sites.
In my role as a copywriter in this position, I learned a considerable amount about targeting the right audience and putting the right content in front of those people. However, for 10 years previous to this position, I was fully engaged in the magazine world, and have a wealth of experience in online and print publishing.
For almost five years, I was the Editor-in-Chief of an online music magazine called Crawdaddy! (currently the archive is not accessible online). Widely known as the first magazine in the U.S. for rock journalism, I spearheaded the re-launch of this magazine in an online format. I worked alongside designers and developers while creating the content structure of the magazine. I maintained a staff of freelance writers, a small team of editors, and a weekly and daily publishing schedule, and I created a style guide for overall consistency.
Previous to Crawdaddy!, I was in New York City and a founding member of The L Magazine. We launched a free cultural events guide that has grown from a relatively modest publication with a bi-weekly circulation of 120,000 to a full-fledged, independent media company that also went on to produce Brooklyn magazine. Here, I was Senior Editor for four years and was in charge of event listings, music reviews, and food and bar reviews.
I've authored one book, a biography on Isaac Asimov, and been the editor for multiple books and side gigs. My most recent passion project was creating and running an online music magazine called No Recess!, where I did everything from site design to leading a crew of cohorts to produce exceptional features and daily content.
